Success stories: Collaborating with agricultural organizations in the Southeast

From September 2021 to February 2025, Nuup and its partners implemented a project with small-scale producers in Los Altos de Chiapas and the Yucatán Peninsula, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The goal: to improve the livelihoods of producers and their communities through systemic interventions that expand access to market and financing opportunities. This effort brought together several innovative initiatives, including the Market Acceleration Program for Inclusive Agriculture (MAP), which supported access to better commercial conditions, and Sirio, a digital tool co-designed with smallholder organizations to improve management, traceability, and strategic data use.

As part of the learning and systematization process, five case studies were developed to illustrate the project’s achievements, lessons learned, and the systemic changes it made possible. Below, we present the cases:

  • COFEMO, a women-led coffee cooperative that eliminated intermediaries and achieved fair prices while strengthening women’s leadership in the value chain;
  • DERMAC, a rural development association in the Soconusco region that improved cacao production management and developed a marketing strategy;
  • Maya Vinic, a cooperative historically dedicated to coffee production that adopted digital tools to increase the traceability and improve the management of its honey collecting;
  • Yochin, a Chiapas cooperative with international clients that leveraged Sirio to digitize internal coffee inspections and meet international standards;
  • Yomol A’tel, a cooperative that sells organic honey in the national market, which worked to consolidate the sale of packaged organic honey while diversifying its range of beekeeping products.

Each case tells a unique story that, together, reflects the diversity and impact of this collective effort. Learn more about each story by reading their case studies of success.
