BioFinCas is an eight-year regional project that promotes the adoption of biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agricultural practices in the coffee, cocoa, and banana value chains in Mexico, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.

In Mexico, the project seeks to strengthen the resilience of the coffee sector through training in sustainable practices, the design and implementation of innovative risk finance solutions, and the promotion of fairer regulatory and commercial frameworks. This is done through a shared-responsibility model that distributes risks and benefits equitably along the value chain and enhances scale through public-policy engagement.

WORK AREAS

The project encourages the adoption of biodiversity-friendly and climate-resilient agricultural practices that regenerate ecosystems and enhance coffee productivity. Through training processes and technical support, producer organizations strengthen their capacities to integrate, monitor, and scale these practices across their territories.

Innovative financial solutions—such as parametric insurance and pre-harvest credit for small-scale coffee farmers—are developed to incentivize and support the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices through shared-responsibility schemes and financial incentives. These tools are co-designed with buyer companies, financial institutions, and producer organizations to facilitate access to finance, reduce climate risks, and promote investments that strengthen the resilience of the coffee sector.

The project promotes the development of fairer and more sustainable value chains that recognize the value of biodiversity-friendly production. Through dialogue and collaboration among producers, companies, and other actors in the sector, shared responsibility is encouraged to ensure an equitable distribution of costs and benefits throughout the coffee value chain.

The project generates evidence and recommendations to integrate biodiversity and climate risk management into policies and programs within the coffee sector. Multisectoral dialogue spaces are created to to scale solutions and strengthen the institutional frameworks that support a just transition toward more resilient and sustainable production.
